A Disturbing Disrespect: The Misuse of Patriots' Day in Manipur
Patriots' Day, celebrated annually on August 13 in Manipur at various places such as schools, societies, institutions, and clubs, is a solemn occasion to honor the sacrifices of those who bravely fought in the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. This day, marking the execution of our revered heroes Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General, serves as a reminder of the courage and determination that secured our state's dignity and freedom. It is a day meant for reflection, respect, and the honoring of our cultural heritage. From the time I can remember, people recited patriotic poems, sang songs, and performed dramas and cultural shows.
Yet, this year, an event at Khuman Lampak Turf Ground took a disheartening turn. Instead of paying homage to our martyrs, the All Manipur Football Association (AMFA) organized a music concert that completely missed the mark. What should have been a respectful tribute to our fallen heroes instead became a display of disregard and inappropriate behavior.
The concert featured rock music—an odd choice for such a solemn day—setting a tone that was out of place. Attendees, many under the influence of alcohol or drugs, engaged in shocking behaviors that were far from the respect and reverence the day demands. Reports indicate that some boys danced naked, while others, including girls, participated in lewd acts such as twerking and other inappropriate gestures. Such actions are not only disrespectful but also deeply damaging to the cultural values we hold dear.
This blatant disregard for the significance of Patriots' Day is alarming. The choice of music, the behavior of the crowd, and the overall atmosphere were a stark contradiction to the values of respect, honor, and remembrance that this day should embody. Instead of a dignified commemoration, we witnessed an event that disrespected the very memory of those who gave their lives for our freedom.
The responsibility for this disgraceful display lies with the organizers, musicians, and entertainers involved. It is evident that they failed to grasp the importance of the day and the expectations of the Manipuri people. Their actions were not only an insult to the memory of our heroes but also a disservice to our community, which prides itself on upholding traditions and honoring those who came before us.
In conclusion, it is crucial that the concerned authorities take strict action against those responsible for this event. The organizers, performers, and participants must be held accountable, facing severe consequences to ensure that such a disrespectful display is never repeated. Patriots' Day should remain a sacred occasion of remembrance, not an opportunity for misconduct. We owe it to our fallen heroes to preserve the dignity and honor of this day, ensuring that future generations understand and respect the significance of their sacrificed.
